Workers’ compensation protected after employer loses certification

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington protects workers’ compensation payments after the director withdraws a covered employer’s self-insurance certification. This applies to covered self-insured employer groups, counties, cities, and other municipal employers. The Department must meet the former self-insured employer’s obligations, including paying workers’ compensation benefits. The employer must repay all Department payments through charges at least quarterly, with repayment timing and methods set by the director. The director must adopt rules covering employers’ continuing duties and how they meet their financial obligations.
