Clear rules for loaded guns in vehicles

Beginning July 27, 2025, a rifle or shotgun in a vehicle is “loaded” if a round is in the chamber. A loaded, capped, or primed muzzleloader also counts. Unlawful possession or use is a misdemeanor. Exceptions apply for on-duty law enforcement and for people with approved disability permits who follow department rules. Limited discharge from a nonmoving vehicle with the engine off is allowed; off‑road vehicles need a permit.

More civil tickets for wildlife violations

Beginning July 27, 2025, listed wildlife acts are civil infractions that can bring a citation and a civil fine. Officers can briefly detain you to investigate. Civil tickets do not stop criminal charges when crimes also apply.

Updated definitions for hunting and fishing

Beginning July 27, 2025, the law updates many key words in fish and wildlife rules. It clarifies terms like angling gear, license year, wildlife, and more. This can change what species, gear, and items are covered. Hunters, anglers, guides, and dealers should check the new meanings to avoid penalties.
