Washington gains tax excludes a deduction

Washington's capital gains tax calculation ignores the federal tax deduction allowed under section 164. This rule changes the federal long-term gain amount used to calculate your Washington taxable gains. It can increase the gains subject to Washington tax for affected investors.

Washington investors can pay gains tax early

Beginning June 11, 2026, you can pay Washington capital gains tax starting six months before it is due. This option applies when you owe the tax, using the Department of Revenue's required form and payment method. If the department finds you overpaid and are due money back, you get no interest for the time before the due date. Paying early does not change the amount of tax owed.
