The state court system runs a program to issue protection order hope cards. Beginning January 1, 2025, if you get a valid full protection order, you can ask the clerk for a hope card when the order is entered. There is no waiting period, and an interpreter can help if one helped at the hearing. You can also request a card from the Administrative Office of the Courts any time before the order expires. There is no fee to get a hope card. A hope card has the same legal effect as the protection order.
Courts provide a scannable hope card when they have the needed tools and data. The card shows the restrained person’s name and birth date; the protected person(s) and protected children; and the court, case number, issue date, and expiration date. It also shows any firearm or weapon bans, surrender orders, or extreme risk orders, with the court, case number, dates, and whether the person is following the order. When possible, the code links to the full digital case file to help police and advocates verify the order fast.
