Student joins college board with limits

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington's community and technical college board grows from nine to ten members, including one student. The governor appoints members with Senate approval. The student must attend a community or technical college and be at least 18 when appointed. The student serves one year; other members serve four years, and vacancies are filled for the remaining term. All members must be U.S. citizens and Washington residents. Members receive board pay and travel reimbursement for days spent on board duties; amounts are not stated here. The student cannot take part in or vote on hiring, discipline, personnel matters, or pending court cases. The board must reflect Washington's geographic diversity, with at least two members living east of the Cascade Mountains. Appointments must consider labor, business, women, and racial and ethnic minority representation. At least one member must come from business and one from labor. The governor can remove members for poor performance, neglect of duty, or misconduct in office. The board can adopt rules to carry out these requirements.
