Year-long paid teacher residencies with mentors

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington runs year-long teacher residencies through partnerships of schools and approved prep programs. Residents teach with a preservice mentor and complete at least 900 hours of clinical practice in one school year. Each resident receives funding, and each preservice mentor co-teaches and receives a stipend. Coursework is tailored to the resident’s classroom, and residents are grouped in cohorts. State money for residencies may be used only to support and operate the residency program, under state spending rules.

Registered teacher apprenticeships with 2,000 hours

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington recognizes teacher apprenticeships that are approved by both the state apprenticeship council and the educator standards board. Apprentices get at least 2,000 hours of mentored, on-the-job teaching using a gradual release method. Up to 540 hours of prior paraeducator work can count toward the 2,000-hour minimum. State funds for apprenticeships may be used only to support and operate the registered program. Starting September 1, 2025, a program must be board‑approved as a teacher preparation program before it can apply to run an apprenticeship, and any partner additions or changes also need board approval. Registered programs must meet the standards in this law.
