Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington law expands medication help from people who are not licensed health practitioners. It covers in-home care at temporary or permanent residences, adult family homes, assisted living, and state-certified developmental-disability residential programs. Helpers can give reminders, open containers, use aids, or place prescription medicines, including controlled substances, in a person's hand. Other forms of help can be defined by Department of Health rules. Helpers can prepare these medicines for self-use when a practitioner says orally or in writing that preparation help is necessary and appropriate. Intravenous medication help remains excluded; injection help remains limited to setting up diabetes devices or handing over medicine for self-use. Acute care and skilled nursing facilities are outside these covered settings.
