More privacy in public workplace investigations

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington public agencies must protect identities when releasing records from covered workplace investigations. These cover possible unfair employment practices or violations of laws or agency policies against discrimination or harassment. Release requires a completed investigation and notice to the complainant about the outcome. Agencies must hide complainants’, accusers’, and witnesses’ names, images, agency job titles, email addresses, and phone numbers unless they consent. Agencies must also mask recorded voices while keeping tone and inflection, unless the person consents to disclosure. Agencies must tell affected people about these privacy steps. When an elected official is the complainant, the official’s name and title remain public.
