School retirees keep pension-and-work option through 2030

Effective May 15, 2025, Washington extends this school-retiree pension exception from July 1, 2025, to January 1, 2030. It covers qualifying retirees returning to nonadministrative school district jobs during the exception period beginning March 23, 2022. They can receive pensions and wages until they exceed 1,040 work hours in the applicable school year or calendar year. Return to work must be more than one month after the pension start date, or more than 100 days under RCW 41.40.037. Plans under RCW 41.32.570, 41.32.802, and 41.32.862 also cover retirees who retired before January 1, 2022, and return as superintendents or in-school administrators in second-class school districts.
