The law names advanced practice registered nurses as eligible health board providers, replacing the earlier reference to nurse practitioners. Providers must hold an active or retired license in good standing under Washington's health licensing law. For county health district boards, they must practice or work in the county.
Beginning July 27, 2025, local health boards must include representatives chosen by each qualifying tribe and urban Indian organization. Tribes qualify if they have reservation or trust lands in the county or health district. Urban Indian organizations must be recognized by the Indian Health Service and registered in Washington as 501(c)(3) nonprofits. They must serve American Indian and Alaska Native people and provide services in the county or district. Boards must notify the American Indian Health Commission. County boards must have equal numbers of non-elected members, including tribal representatives, and city and county elected officials. State Board of Health rules setting deadlines for membership changes must take effect by July 27, 2026. Until those rules take effect, counties must add representatives within 60 days after notice of their selection.
