Contractors need bonds only for construction

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington limits required bonds on covered design-build public works contracts to construction. Contractors must provide performance and payment bonds worth at least the contracted construction amount. Bonds do not need to cover design, preconstruction, or other services that are not public works construction. Contractors must provide the bonds before construction starts and within 10 days after the public body requests them. This can lower contractors’ bonding costs.
