Crime for pretending to be law enforcement

Beginning June 11, 2026, it is a gross misdemeanor to pretend to be law enforcement. This includes acts that make a reasonable person think you are on duty, like using a police-style vehicle, uniform, or badge. Agency-issued items may be displayed if you are still authorized by policy. Heirs and retired officers may keep insignia when policy allows; retirees are presumed allowed unless policy forbids or the agency asks for return. Art, news, education, politics, satire, and parody are protected; peace officer includes police, sheriffs, marshals, and federal officers.

New crimes for fake veterans and deepfakes

Beginning June 11, 2026, it is a gross misdemeanor to pose as a veteran or active-duty member to get money or aid crimes. It is also a gross misdemeanor to share fake images or audio of someone as real to defraud, harass, threaten, intimidate, or for any unlawful purpose, when you know or should know it is fake. Art, news, education, politics, satire, and parody remain protected. Internet platforms and phone or broadband carriers are not liable just because users post the content.
