Beginning June 11, 2026, vendors providing medically tailored meals through Washington medical assistance must follow each recipient’s nutrition care plan. A credentialed medical professional authorized to create and tailor nutrition plans must review and approve menus for these fresh or frozen meals. Meals must follow proven nutrition guidance for the recipient’s condition and meet dietary needs, including allergies and cultural preferences. Each meal must provide at least 500 calories or meet medically appropriate energy needs, plus one-third of recommended carbohydrate and protein amounts unless an exception is allowed. Vendors must favor local whole foods or meals made from scratch unless the recipient’s needs require otherwise.
Beginning June 11, 2026, contracted providers of Washington medical assistance meal benefits must favor qualifying nonprofits and small businesses when possible. These vendors must offer locally sourced, fresh, whole foods or meals made from scratch. Locally sourced includes food grown, raised, harvested, caught, or otherwise derived fully or partly in Washington. Food prepared, processed, assembled, cooked, or packaged fully or partly in Washington also qualifies. This buying priority does not guarantee a contract or change recipients’ benefit amounts.
