Stronger safety checks for sprinkler work

Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington strengthens enforcement of sprinkler contractor licenses and fitter certificates, including for residential sprinkler work. Contractors and fitters must show their license or certificate when an authorized fire code official asks. Failure to show proof is an infraction. Officials can stop projects involving unlicensed contractors, uncertified fitters, or other violations. Orders remain until officials find compliance or ensure the work will follow the law. For public safety, officials can require removal and replacement of systems or parts installed, altered, or extended by unqualified workers. Authorized local or state officials must notify the state fire protection director or designee about violations to start an investigation. The director or designee can investigate contractor violations and require all relevant payroll records promptly during an active contractor investigation.
