Wellness training counts for plumbers and electricians

Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington plumbers and electricians renewing their certificates can count up to four hours of approved wellness training. These hours count toward plumbers’ required 24 continuing education hours over the prior three years or electricians’ annual eight-hour course. Washington’s Department of Labor and Industries must approve the training, which must include at least two hours of instruction. Topics must cover behavioral health and wellness, suicide prevention, substance use awareness and prevention, peer support, and finding resources.

Construction apprentices must complete extra wellness training

Beginning July 1, 2027, Washington Apprenticeship Council-approved building and construction trade programs must provide wellness training that apprentices must successfully complete. It must include at least two instructional hours added to—not replacing—the program’s other required instruction. Training covers reducing behavioral health stigma, supporting wellness, recognizing distress, suicide prevention, and substance use awareness and prevention. It also covers peer support and connecting apprentices with resources. New or updated program standards approved on or after July 1, 2027, must include these training hours.
