Disability insurers must disclose rate-setting formulas

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington requires more detailed rate filings for experience-rated group disability income insurance. This covers plans whose premiums depend on the group's past claims. Before using their rates, insurers must file their experience-rating formulas, all applicable rating factors, and credibility formulas. Filings must let the insurance commissioner check whether a group's claims history is fully or partly reliable for setting rates. The commissioner must also be able to reproduce premiums using the group's actual claims history and demographics. The law does not require premiums to change.
