Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington expands protections against interference by force or violence and intimidation through threats of either. Protections cover public and private elementary and secondary school employees, contractors, students, and officials—including volunteer officials—at extracurricular sports. The protected person must be peacefully performing duties or studies. Both offenses are gross misdemeanors, punishable by a fine up to $500, jail up to six months, or both. Public school students who interfere by force or violence may face emergency removal under state student-discipline rules. If the interference happens during extracurricular sports, the student may be barred from participating in or attending that activity. Nonstudents convicted of this interference must be barred from the school or sports activity involved for 12 to 18 months.
