Washington workers can buy pension credit

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington LEOFF Plan 2 members can buy pension credit for employer-approved unpaid leave. The limit is two years over their working career, including when they retire without returning to work. Members must pay the employer, member, and state contributions, plus interest set by the Department of Retirement Systems. Payment is due within five years after returning to work or before retirement, whichever comes first. Members who retire without returning must pay before retirement. Their payment uses their salary when leave began, adjusted for cost-of-living or other pay increases for similar jobs. Members who miss the five-year deadline can still buy credit before retirement under a separate payment calculation.
