Effective July 27, 2025, Washington delays the deadline for Medicaid managed care plans and health insurers to use updated addiction-treatment criteria. The deadline moves from January 1, 2026, to no later than January 1, 2028. These are the American Society of Addiction Medicine's Fourth Edition criteria, including versions for adolescents and young adults. Washington's Health Care Authority and Office of the Insurance Commissioner must jointly decide whether to use updated versions, including youth versions. They must post their decision on their websites and can jointly decide not to require the updated criteria. The law does not specify changes to patients' coverage amounts or costs.
