Beginning July 27, 2025, port districts can ask voters to extend commissioner terms from four years to six. The measure can start by a commission resolution or by a voter petition with signatures equal to 10% of those who voted in the last general election. Petitions go to the county auditor. If the auditor verifies enough valid signatures, the measure goes on the next general election at least 60 days after the resolution or petition. If a simple majority approves, the winner in that race serves a six‑year term and other sitting commissioners keep their current terms. If two seats are filled in that election or the next general election, the top vote‑getter gets six years and the other gets four; after that, successors to those seats serve six years. This option does not apply to ports that must keep four‑year terms under RCW 53.12.172 or to ports with five commissioners.
