More optional benefits for Washington public employees

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington’s Public Employees’ Benefits Board can study, set evaluation standards for, and offer more voluntary benefits. These options are for eligible public employees, and offerings depend on available funding. Options include emergency transportation, identity protection, legal aid, long-term care insurance, and personal car insurance for noncommercial use. They also include homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, pet insurance, fixed-payment hospital or specified-disease insurance, and travel insurance. Employees pay for any benefits they choose, but enrollment is not required. Fixed-payment insurance must stand alone, not coordinate with other coverage, and be regulated by Washington’s Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
