Year-long birth control coverage for Washington enrollees

Beginning January 1, 2026, this law applies to Washington health plans issued or renewed on or after that date. Plans that cover contraceptive drugs must reimburse you for a 12-month supply obtained at once. You can request less, or your prescribing provider can require a smaller supply. Plans must let you get these drugs at your provider’s office when dispensing is available there. Dispensing must follow clinical guidelines that protect patient health while maximizing access. Plans retain permission to limit refills in their year’s last three months after dispensing a 12-month supply that year. Contraceptive drugs include all FDA-approved drugs used to prevent pregnancy, including pills, skin patches, and vaginal products.
