Effective July 27, 2025, the law expands Washington’s community-center property tax exemption for taxes collected in 2026 through 2035. Nonprofits acquiring school property declared surplus by the local school board qualify for an exemption lasting 40 years from acquisition. They must acquire the property, including buildings, to create community facilities offering coordinated services that do not include housing. Property acquired from a tax-exempt university and determined surplus to its needs also qualifies, but only for 2026 through 2035. Qualifying community centers can lend or rent space to businesses, individuals, or other parties.
