New certification for electricians installing public chargers

Beginning January 1, 2026, Washington requires extra certification for work on electric vehicle charging equipment at public works. This covers only installation and maintenance of electrical parts. Workers must complete the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program or a similar nationally recognized certification program. The requirement applies only if the program is open to all general journey-level electricians. Qualifying apprentices are exempt when supervised by a journey-level electrician with this certification. Installations under contracts entered into before January 1, 2026, are exempt.
