New building code process for kit homes

Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington law creates a building-code category for kit homes of 800 square feet or less. These homes use prefabricated walls, floors, and roofs assembled on-site. The State Building Code Council must conduct rulemaking for these homes by March 31, 2027. The council can update the codes afterward. The law does not set the final building requirements or say how they will affect construction costs.
