Schools encouraged to teach donation awareness

Washington encourages school districts, charter schools, and state-tribal education compact schools to teach blood and bone marrow donation awareness. For grades 9–12, these lessons are encouraged, not required. Beginning in the 2025–26 school year, schools may include them in at least one health class required for graduation. Schools may also offer age-appropriate lessons in kindergarten through grade 8. Lessons must use programs from the National Marrow Donor Program, American Red Cross, America’s Blood Centers, Bloodworks Northwest, or another nationally recognized donation organization. The state education office must post links to these programs on its website. Schools may teach lessons directly or use available community providers; lessons need not be taught only by certificated instructional staff.
