Washington's public and school employee benefit boards must consider proven wellness strategies when designing benefit plans. Public employee strategies include quitting smoking, preventing injuries and accidents, and reducing alcohol misuse. They also include healthy weight loss, exercise, vehicle safety, lower cholesterol, and nutrition education. School employee plans must also consider preventive care, chronic disease management, and other proven health approaches. These planning duties do not guarantee coverage of any specific service or benefit.
Beginning January 1, 2028, Washington's public and school employee benefit boards stop offering Smart Health, its incentive, and its online portal. Employees who meet incentive eligibility requirements by December 31, 2027, still receive the incentive for plan year 2028. No employee can newly qualify starting January 1, 2028. The incentive amount is not stated.
