Washington Leadership Board Can Raise More Funds

Beginning June 11, 2026, the Washington State Leadership Board can seek and accept public or private gifts, grants, and endowments. The law makes the board a trustee for the state. Its mission includes honoring outstanding service and expanding education, sports, leadership, and job opportunities for youth, veterans, and people with disabilities. The board can conduct activities supporting that mission. Spending must follow the funds’ terms and the law’s purposes. Private money must support authorized work not funded by lawmakers; it cannot replace or reduce legislative funding. Lawmakers can also fund the board when money is available, but the law sets no funding amount. The board must post all funds received and spending on its website. Its executive director must regularly report private funds to the Office of Financial Management. A yearly Washington World Fellows financial report must reach the appropriate legislative committees by January 15. The board must adopt bylaws and governance and transparency policies. It appoints an executive director with the lieutenant governor’s consent; removal for cause requires a majority board vote. The lieutenant governor’s office can provide space and administrative help when consistent with its mission.

Leadership Board Drops Sports Mentoring Role

Beginning June 11, 2026, sports mentoring is removed from the Washington State Leadership Board’s listed programs. The law also removes the listed role of the lieutenant governor’s office in helping administer sports mentoring. The board still administers Washington World Fellows, a college readiness and study abroad fellowship, Boundless Washington, and Compassion Scholars. The lieutenant governor’s office can still collaborate on Washington World Fellows. The law does not say the sports mentoring program itself ends.
