Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington’s retirement director can use interest earned by eight public retirement systems to pay qualifying expenses. These are the public employees’, teachers’, state patrol, Washington judicial, judges’, school employees’, public safety employees’, and law enforcement officers’ and firefighters’ systems. Legal and medical expenses must mainly protect the appropriate fund or meet laws governing that fund. Covered legal costs include legal services, expert witnesses, travel, court reporters, transcripts, and document copies. Medical costs include member or retiree exams, medical reports, and medical professionals’ attendance at discovery proceedings or hearings. The earnings can also pay for fraud prevention, fraud investigations, and overpayment collection, including collection agency fees. Fund protection costs include audits, cybersecurity, petition decisions, and department coordination with the attorney general’s office. Recovered money must return to the appropriate retirement funds. The law does not create a direct household payment or set a benefit amount.
