Schools gain flexibility over vehicle funds

Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington school districts can request transfers of vehicle depreciation payments and earned interest to another fund. The money must come from a fully depreciated vehicle and can be used for another purpose. Districts must shrink their fleets by skipping vehicle replacement because student populations or transportation needs changed. The superintendent of public instruction must approve when the fleet reduction is appropriate. That decision must be based on forecast enrollment declines or other relevant factors affecting the district’s transportation program.
