Ports keep funding authority for cleaner equipment

Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington removes the December 31, 2031 expiration of its port equipment funding authority. Port districts and port development authorities can use available money to buy zero- and near-zero-emission cargo equipment and supporting infrastructure. These purchases can benefit the ports, authorities, or their tenants or lessees. Covered authorities are those created by one port district or jointly by two districts. The existing ban on buying fully automated marine container cargo handling equipment remains. That ban covers remotely operated or monitored equipment, with or without human control. The law provides no new funding or specified funding amount.
