Beginning June 11, 2026, Washington expands which counties qualify as rural for public facilities funding. Counties qualify with fewer than 100 people per square mile. Counties with at least 100 people per square mile also qualify if no city has more than 45,000 people. A county smaller than 225 square miles qualifies regardless of population density. Local governments in qualifying counties can seek funding, but awards are not guaranteed.
