Higher Medicaid payments for rural reservation hospitals

Beginning January 1, 2027, rural hospitals on federally recognized Indian reservations qualify for higher Medicaid payments. For inpatient and outpatient care, payments equal 150% of Medicaid’s fee-for-service rate—the rate paid for each service. Patients must be eligible for Medicaid, and the rate applies whether or not they have managed care coverage. Services provided through psychiatric unit beds are excluded. The extra money goes to hospitals, not directly to patients. The payment rule expires January 1, 2029.
