Raleigh and Mason districts gain sales-tax authority

The law lets Raleigh and Mason counties tax goods and services sold by businesses in two specific districts. These cover about 1,600 contiguous acres in Raleigh County and 150 contiguous acres in Mason County’s Town of Henderson. Both county commissions must hold public hearings before imposing the tax. Raleigh County must also submit required applications and get West Virginia Development Office approval. Neither county must impose the tax, and the law sets no rate; customers may pay more where it is imposed. The law takes effect 90 days after passage.
