Stevens workers keep leave, face probation

All county employees at Stevens Correctional Center transfer to the state corrections division and enter the state’s classified service system. They keep their rank and accrued annual and sick leave. They must serve a one-year probationary period. The law does not specify a pay change.

State takes over Stevens prison and debt

West Virginia’s corrections division now runs Stevens Correctional Center in McDowell County, replacing the county contract arrangement. The state owns the center’s buildings, equipment, and other assets. The state or its corrections division assumes the center’s debt and prior liabilities, shifting responsibility away from McDowell County. The law gives no dollar amount for these obligations.
