Free Gold Star plate for parents and spouses

Gold Star spouses and Gold Star parents do not pay registration fees for one Gold Star Family license plate. You must qualify for the Gold Star lapel button under 10 U.S.C. § 1126. The free plate is for personal use only. Other DMV charges, like the one-time $10 plate application fee, may still apply.

More military plate options, $10 fee

The DMV continues to issue special military plates that existed before 2023 to eligible service members and next of kin of those killed in combat. You must show proof the DMV Commissioner accepts. You can get the same plate for any number of vehicles you own. A surviving spouse may keep using the plate until death, remarriage, or nonrenewal. You pay a one-time $10 application fee for each special plate, in addition to regular registration charges. For any new plate honoring a congressionally chartered group, the group must guarantee at least 100 applicants.
