30-day and credential rule for substitutes

Beginning June 12, 2026, you count as a long‑term substitute when you fill a job for more than 30 consecutive instructional days, whether you cover a vacancy or an extended absence. If a job is expected to last over 30 days, the county must post it at the start of the year and again mid‑year. The posting must list it as a regular full‑time job that is not held by a regular full‑time employee. Anyone serving in a long‑term substitute role must hold the State Board‑required credential. For retiree benefit rules in §5‑16‑2, a retired employee hired to fill a vacancy is not treated as a long‑term substitute.
