Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Regular audits for volunteer fire companies

The West Virginia Legislative Auditor reviews each volunteer fire company at least once every five years. The Auditor can audit sooner if there are signs of loss or misuse. Reviews cover all income, assets, debts, and spending. The Auditor sets policies so the office can pay audit costs. If an audit finds suspicious transactions, the Auditor asks the State Auditor to investigate and seek fixes or prosecution.

Secure online filing for fire audits

Volunteer fire companies may submit audit documents electronically once secure systems are in place. The Legislative Auditor must have documented security controls and effective encryption to protect financial data. After those safeguards are ready, electronic filing is allowed.
