School shooting teams gain limited rifle access

Beginning July 10, 2025, West Virginia allows air and rimfire rifles on primary and secondary school grounds for shooting-team purposes. School-sponsored team functions also qualify at sites owned, rented, or leased by state education agencies, county school boards, or local public schools. The covered agencies are the West Virginia Department of Education and the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission. Bus transport is allowed only to or from school-sponsored team events. On buses, rifles and ammunition must be in a locked case at a location designated by the state or county transportation director. During the school day or outside team events and practices, rifles and ammunition must be locked where students cannot access them.
