Beginning July 1, 2026, full-time crash and rescue firefighters in the Wyoming National Guard are firefighter retirement members. Full-time or temporary full-time wildland firefighters employed by any state agency also qualify as firefighter members. Full-time correctional forestry crew supervisors, crew supervisors, and forestry crew managers are law enforcement retirement members. For wildland firefighters and these correctional forestry jobs, coverage starts July 1, 2026 unless you elect to stay a general member by April 30, 2026; that choice is final. Service credit from other Wyoming Retirement Board plans does not carry over to firefighter or law enforcement credit, except credit you already earned in those member types.
The state provides $411,000 to the Office of State Lands and Investments for retirement contributions under this law. The money covers July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2028 and cannot be used for other purposes. Any unspent funds return on June 30, 2028. Lawmakers state they intend to include this in the office’s next standard budget.
