Hazard pay and paid time off for wildland firefighters

Beginning May 1, 2026, state wildland firefighters get hazard pay and paid time off for dangerous fire work. Covered jobs include correctional forestry crew supervisors, correctional crew supervisors, correctional forestry crew managers, and other wildland firefighting roles in the state forestry division. The Office of State Lands and Investments sets the hazard pay differential and paid time off rules. It tracks federal firefighter standards but does not have to match them. The law provides $422,500 from the general fund for hazard pay from May 1, 2026 through June 30, 2028. The money can be used only for hazard pay, and any unused funds return on June 30, 2028.

Agencies must write rules for firefighter pay

The Department of Administration and Information and the Office of State Lands and Investments must issue rules to carry out this law. The rules put the hazard pay differential and firefighter paid time off into practice. Sections 3 and 4 take effect upon enactment, so rulemaking can start right away.
