Governor creates state defense council

The governor appoints a Wyoming state council of defense to coordinate defense efforts. With the governor’s approval, the council can set rules and create branches. It helps with the Wyoming state guard and other defense work. Members do not need prior military service, and the governor may remove members under W.S. 9-1-202.

Wyoming state guard when National Guard activated

The governor may set up and run a Wyoming state guard when the state’s National Guard is in U.S. service. The state guard keeps the peace, enforces state laws, handles riots or invasions, responds to disasters, and supports wildland fire fights. Leaders use National Guard rules as a guide when practical. The U.S. Secretary of Defense sets how large the force can be, and future growth needs authorization.
