Angel Yeast Co., Ltd. (Yichang, Hubei Province, China; SZSE: 600298; ~8B CNY revenue 2024) is China's largest commercial yeast company and the world's third-largest, with approximately 10% global market share for baker's yeast. Angel's Yichang, Hubei facility is the world's largest single yeast production site — a massive integrated fermentation complex on the Yangtze River that benefits from cheap molasses sourced from China's southern sugarcane belt and convenient river logistics. Beyond baker's yeast, Angel Yeast is a major global producer of yeast extract (used in food flavoring, MSG alternatives, and animal feed), nutritional yeast, yeast-derived proteins, and specialty fermentation ingredients for the food, pharmaceutical, and aquaculture industries. Angel Yeast has aggressively expanded internationally, establishing manufacturing in Egypt, Russia, Ethiopia, and Indonesia to serve non-Chinese markets with locally produced yeast. The company's Yichang plant alone is estimated to produce more yeast than many entire countries.

Angel Yeast's yeast-derived proteins — marketed as a sustainable replacement for fishmeal in aquaculture feed — are simultaneously being adopted by the global farmed salmon, shrimp, and tilapia industries as they face regulatory and sustainability pressure to reduce dependence on wild-caught fishmeal (which requires fishing down the marine food chain to produce fish protein for farmed fish). Angel Yeast's Yichang fermentation facility produces yeast-derived single-cell protein that is nutritionally equivalent to fishmeal for many farmed species. The sustainable aquaculture supply chain (marine protein) depends on Angel Yeast's China fermentation (terrestrial protein fermentation). At the same time, the same Angel Yeast facility also produces yeast extract used in plant-based meat products (Beyond Meat, Impossible Burger use yeast extract as a savory flavor enhancer). The plant-based meat supply chain (animal farming alternative) and the sustainable aquaculture supply chain (wild fishing alternative) both depend on Chinese yeast fermentation from the same Yangtze River facility. Two supply chains oriented toward reducing animal protein production both run through a single large-scale Chinese yeast factory.

  • Concentration2023

Angel Yeast's Yichang, Hubei Province production complex is the world's largest single yeast production site — a scale advantage that gives China's largest yeast company a structural cost position unmatched by any Western competitor. Yichang's location on the Yangtze River (adjacent to the Three Gorges Dam) provides cheap electricity, water access, and logistics. Angel Yeast has used this cost base to aggressively expand international market share in Africa and Southeast Asia, markets where Lesaffre and AB Mauri dominated historically. In Egypt, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, Angel Yeast has established or is establishing local production facilities staffed with Chinese technical personnel, replicating the Yichang model in emerging markets. Angel Yeast's international expansion follows the same template used by Chinese companies across other manufacturing sectors: production at scale in China, cost-competitive export pricing to establish market position, then local production investment to capture logistics advantages in target markets. The commercial baker's yeast industry that was dominated by European companies from the 1850s through the 2000s is being structurally reshapen by Chinese scale production from the 2010s onward.

  • Origin2023

Angel Yeast was founded in 1986 in Yichang, Hubei Province — the city on the Yangtze River most closely associated with the Three Gorges Dam project, which was under construction from 1994 to 2006 less than 40km upstream. Angel Yeast was established as a state-owned enterprise during China's early reform era, specifically sited in Yichang for its access to cheap molasses from Guangxi and Yunnan sugarcane regions via Yangtze River barge, and cheap electricity from the Gezhouba Dam (1988), the predecessor hydroelectric facility that preceded Three Gorges. The company was privatized and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE: 600298) and grew to become the world's third-largest yeast company by building the world's largest single yeast fermentation complex at the Yichang site. Three Gorges Dam, when completed, provided even cheaper hydroelectric power for the energy-intensive fermentation operations. Angel Yeast's cost structure advantage — cheap Yangtze electricity, cheap river-barge molasses logistics, low Chinese labor costs — enabled it to export yeast globally and establish manufacturing in Egypt, Russia, and Ethiopia to compete with Lesaffre and AB Mauri in international markets that Western yeast companies had considered secure.
