Aurubis AG (XETRA: NAFG, HQ Hamburg, Germany; ~€18B revenue) is Europe's largest copper producer and a major brass semi-finished products manufacturer via its 50% ownership of Schwermetall Halbzeugwerk GmbH & Co. KG (Stolberg, Germany, JV with Wieland Group). Schwermetall is one of Europe's most significant brass strip and rod producers, supplying European plumbing fittings manufacturers, valve makers, and precision parts industries. Aurubis also produces copper rod and cathode at Hamburg and Pirdop (Bulgaria). The Schwermetall JV gives Aurubis direct exposure to the plumbing brass supply chain without operating finished fittings plants. Aurubis's zinc smelting operations (via Berzelius subsidiary, Duisburg) supply the zinc alloyed into brass at Schwermetall — creating a partially integrated zinc-to-brass-rod supply chain.

Aurubis AG (Hamburg, Germany) is the world's largest secondary (recycled) copper refiner — processing end-of-life e-waste, cable scrap, printed circuit board copper, and industrial manufacturing scrap into LME-registered Grade A cathode at its Hamburg smelter. Approximately 40-50% of Aurubis's ~1 million tonne/year cathode output is derived from secondary scrap rather than primary mined concentrate. This makes Aurubis the critical infrastructure node for Europe's copper circularity — European copper that was initially mined in Chile in 1990, made into wire, wired into a building, then scrapped during renovation, can return to Aurubis Hamburg as shredded cable scrap and re-emerge as LME Grade A cathode indistinguishable from newly mined copper. The 2024 startup of Aurubis's new Augusta, Georgia, USA plant (designed to process North American copper scrap) extends this circular copper recycling model to the United States for the first time at industrial scale.

Aurubis AG's Pirdop, Bulgaria smelter (Aurubis Bulgaria EAD, formerly BKME — the Bulgarian state copper enterprise) is the feedstock backbone for Aurubis Hamburg rod mill, which is in turn the primary rod supplier for European cable makers. This creates a three-node cascade: Pirdop smelts concentrates (primarily from Chile, Peru, and Kazakhstan) to cathode → Hamburg refines and casts to rod → Nexans/Prysmian/Leoni draw to wire. The Pirdop smelter is located in the Srednogorie mountains of central Bulgaria, 60km east of Sofia. Bulgaria's EU membership creates regulatory alignment but also exposes the smelter to EU environmental litigation: Pirdop has faced ongoing disputes over SO2 emissions and historical heavy metals contamination in the Pirdop valley. A prolonged Pirdop outage (equipment failure, regulatory shutdown, geopolitical disruption) would constrain Aurubis Hamburg rod output within weeks, tightening European rod supply significantly.

Aurubis AG traces to 1866 when Norddeutsche Affinerie (North German Refinery) was founded in Hamburg — a city whose port position made it the natural European landing point for copper concentrate shipped from South American and African mines. The Hamburg smelter grew alongside Germany's industrial revolution, becoming one of Europe's major copper refining centers. The company was renamed Aurubis in 2009 when it modernized its brand after expanding through acquisitions (including the Peute Metall copper recycling business and European copper tube manufacturers). Aurubis now processes ~1.7 million tonnes of copper concentrates and scrap annually, making it Europe's largest copper producer.
