BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) was founded in 1897 in New York City by Maxwell Becton and Fairleigh Dickinson, who had been a Tiffany & Company salesman. The founding context: the US had no domestic medical device manufacturing; surgeons depended entirely on German and French-made glass syringes and surgical instruments. Becton and Dickinson began importing instruments and then pivoted to domestic manufacturing, developing American-made glass syringes to compete with German imports. The German blockade of medical supply exports during World War I provided the decisive catalyst: with German instruments unavailable, BD became the primary domestic supplier of syringes and needles for the US military and civilian medicine. This wartime supply chain disruption — American medicine suddenly cut off from German instruments — transformed BD from an importer to a manufacturer and established it as the dominant US syringe company. BD pioneered the shift from glass to plastic syringes in the 1950s-60s, making disposable syringes economically viable. The Sandy, Utah EO sterilization facility — at risk from EPA air quality enforcement in 2020s — was built specifically to sterilize BD's plastic IV catheters and other heat-sensitive devices. When EPA threatened closure of the Sandy facility, the FDA issued unusual public letters warning against closure, explicitly stating that BD's catheters were critical medical devices with constrained alternative supply.
