BioLab was founded in 1955 to serve the poultry industry — specifically chlorinated compound use in poultry processing sanitation — before pivoting to pool chemicals. It was owned sequentially by Lonza Group (global pharmaceutical contract manufacturer), Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, Crompton/Chemtura (specialty chemical), and finally KIK Consumer Products (Canadian PE-backed consumer products company) from 2014. KIK invested $250 million to rebuild the Hurricane Laura-destroyed Westlake plant while simultaneously the Conyers plant burned again in 2024 and then permanently closed. The global pharmaceutical contract manufacturer that owned BioLab (Lonza) is now best known for making mRNA COVID vaccines — a different kind of emergency preparedness story.
