Producer
BioLab, Inc.
One of only three US domestic trichlor (trichloroisocyanuric acid) producers; subsidiary of SCP Pool Corporation / KIK Consumer Products. Westlake, Louisiana facility produces ~one-third of US trichlor supply; fire from Hurricane Laura (Aug 2020) shut plant for 2+ years (reopened Nov 2022), causing nationwide pool chemical shortage.

BioLab Conyers Trichlor Plant (PERMANENTLY CLOSED May 2025) →
USConyers, Rockdale County, Georgia · chemical_plant
PERMANENTLY CLOSED as of May 2025. Opened 1973; experienced TCCA fires in September 2020 (minor) and September 29, 2024 (catastrophic — malfunctioning fire sprinkler drenched TCCA, triggering a fire visible 30 miles away, collapsing the warehouse, forcing shelter-in-place for 90,000 Conyers residents, evacuation of ~17,000, and 15,000 students out of school for 3 weeks). BioLab announced in May 2025 it would permanently cease manufacturing at Conyers. This is a permanent reduction in US domestic trichlor capacity with no announced replacement.
BioLab Westlake Trichlor Plant →
USWestlake, Louisiana · chlorinated isocyanurate manufacturing
One of only 3 US trichlor production facilities; produces ~1/3 of total US trichlor supply. Hurricane Laura (Aug 27, 2020) tore off roof; rainwater contact with TCCA triggered 3-day chlorine gas fire. US Chemical Safety Board issued final investigation report April 2023. Plant closed 2+ years; reopened November 2022. Single facility disruption caused 2-year national pool chemical shortage.

Did you know2023
BioLab was founded in 1955 to serve the poultry industry — specifically chlorinated compound use in poultry processing sanitation — before pivoting to pool chemicals. It was owned sequentially by Lonza Group (global pharmaceutical contract manufacturer), Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, Crompton/Chemtura (specialty chemical), and finally KIK Consumer Products (Canadian PE-backed consumer products company) from 2014. KIK invested $250 million to rebuild the Hurricane Laura-destroyed Westlake plant while simultaneously the Conyers plant burned again in 2024 and then permanently closed. The global pharmaceutical contract manufacturer that owned BioLab (Lonza) is now best known for making mRNA COVID vaccines — a different kind of emergency preparedness story.
