Burckhardt Compression was established in 1844 in Winterthur, Switzerland -- 10 years before Germany's Karl von Linde invented the first practical refrigeration machine (1876) and 45 years before the first natural gas pipeline was laid in North America. The founders were Swiss mechanical engineers in the industrial textile machinery hub of Winterthur, which also produced Sulzer AG (pumps and engines) and Rieter AG (textile machinery) -- a 19th-century Swiss precision engineering cluster. Burckhardt's labyrinth piston (LABY) compressor technology, developed in the 20th century, solved a critical challenge in high-pressure gas compression: eliminating piston rings to reduce wear, contamination, and maintenance in applications where gas purity is critical (hydrogen, oxygen, semiconductor process gases). The LABY design made Burckhardt the preferred supplier for applications where conventional ring-lubricated compressors would contaminate the gas.
