Origin2023
Calumet Inc. (formerly Calumet Specialty Products Partners LP) takes its name from the Calumet Region of northwest Indiana and Illinois — the industrial district along the Calumet River south of Chicago that was home to the largest concentration of steel mills in the world in the early 20th century. The region's name itself comes from the Native American calumet (peace pipe) — a now-ironic name for one of the most polluted industrial landscapes in American history. Calumet as a company grew through acquisitions of specialty petroleum refineries that process crude oil fractions too heavy for standard refining but well-suited for asphalt, lubricants, and specialty fuels. The Princeton, Louisiana refinery — on the Ouachita River in northwest Louisiana — is specifically designed to refine the naphthenic crude oils that produce roofing-grade flux bitumen, the material that holds asphalt shingles together. GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed depend on Calumet's Princeton refinery for the asphalt in their shingles. In 2023, Calumet converted from a master limited partnership (MLP) to a corporation as it began development of its Great Falls, Montana facility for sustainable aviation fuel production — the first US petroleum specialty refiner to pivot an existing refinery to SAF at significant scale.
