Caterpillar was founded in 1925 through the merger of Holt Manufacturing (makers of the first practical crawler tractor, used in WWI as the inspiration for the military tank) and C.L. Best Tractor Co. The Holt track-type tractor — which used continuous tracks rather than wheels to distribute weight in soft ground — was the direct mechanical ancestor of both the modern bulldozer and the military tank. Caterpillar's Resource Industries segment produces the 797F — the world's largest diesel-electric mining haul truck (400 short ton / 363 metric ton capacity) used at large open-pit copper, coal, and iron ore mines. A single 797F requires approximately 4,800 liters of diesel fuel per hour at full capacity. These trucks are critical enablers of the global copper and iron ore supply chains — without them, the stripping ratios required to access deeper ore bodies become uneconomical.
