Compass Minerals International

CMPHQ US · Overland Park, Kansaswebsite ↗

US minerals company operating Patience Lake Mine (near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) — a solution potash mine using brine pumped from the Devonian Prairie Evaporite Formation. Patience Lake is one of Saskatchewan's three operating solution mines. Also operates Cote Blanche salt mine (Louisiana), Ogden salt operation (Utah), and is a major North American highway de-icing salt producer. Compass Minerals' Patience Lake operation is smaller scale than Nutrien or Mosaic; the company has faced capital allocation pressures around its Saskatchewan potash asset.

  • Did you know2024

Compass Minerals extracts sulfate of potash (SOP) fertilizer from the Great Salt Lake brine — the fertilizer supply chain justification for its Utah operations. But the same Great Salt Lake brine contains lithium at concentrations that are commercially attractive. Compass has a lithium extraction project targeting 25,000-40,000 tonnes LCE/year of battery-grade lithium carbonate from this brine body, which would make it one of the largest US domestic lithium producers and a critical supplier to EV battery makers. The road-salt and fertilizer company is thus the potential gatekeeper of a significant fraction of US domestic lithium supply — the same company that keeps highways passable in winter is positioning to power the electrification of the American car fleet.

  • Origin2023

Compass Minerals was assembled through the 1990s consolidation of North American salt operations — including the Goderich underground salt mine in Ontario (the world's largest underground salt mine, originally a Dow Chemical / Sifto Salt asset) and Great Salt Lake evaporation ponds in Utah. The company went public on the NYSE in 2003 under Apollo Management's ownership. The Great Salt Lake SOP operations were inherited from a long history of brine extraction in the closed-basin lake system of the Bonneville Salt Flats region.
